A gunbattle between Mexican soldiers and suspected drug cartel members left 22 dead at ranch near the U.S. border, the Defense Department said Thursday.

Two South Texas police officers are charged with pot smuggling as part of a federal investigation targeting Mexican drug cartels.

Roma police officers Jose Omar Garcia and his brother, Roel Roberto Garcia, are under indictment for allegedly conspiring to smuggle more than 100 pounds of marijuana since 2006. Five others were also charged, including the father of the two officers.

An Ohio mother has been accused of teaching her 2-year-old daughter to smoke marijuana after prosecutors said she e-mailed to friends a video of the child puffing on a joint.

The 2009 FBI Uniform Crime Report has been released. Last year’s report showed a decrease of nearly 25,000 from 2007, but this year we find marijuana arrests increased by over 10,000 to 858,408, the 2nd-highest total ever recorded.
