Einen eher ungewöhnlichen Weihnachtsbaum hat die Polizei bei einem Haschisch-Fan in Rheinland-Pfalz entdeckt: Er hatte eine gut zwei Meter hohe Hanfpflanze in einen Christbaumständer gesetzt und mit einer Lichterkette geschmückt, teilte die Polizei in Koblenz am Mittwoch mit. Auf Nachfrage erklärte der "Alt-68er" aus dem Westerwald, dass er den "Baum" noch weiter schmücken und an Weihnachten auch die Geschenke darunter legen werde.

he European Union will not block any initiative of EU Member States to start the legal regulation of cannabis and other currently illegal drugs. This was repeatedly stated by Dana Spinant, the new Coordinator of the European Commissions Anti-Drugs Unit, at a Public Hearing on Drug Policies in the European Parliament today.

The hearing was organised by Member of European Parliament Michael Tremopoulos (Greens, Greece) and ENCOD, a coalition of citizens for drug policy reform. It brought together the expertise of representatives of civil society -among others leading Spanish activist for legal cannabis Martin Barriuso, spokesman of the Union of Dutch Coffeeshops Marc Josemans, and Richard Cowan, former director of NORML, USA’s largest reform organisation. Members of European Parliament Rui Tavares (GUE, Portugal) and Dennis de Jong (GUE, Netherlands) also spoke at the event.

A two-metre (six-foot) marijuana plant decorated as a Christmas tree was confiscated from the home of "an old hippie", who is now facing a drug possession charge, German police said Wednesday.

In a tongue-in-cheek press release titled "All you need is love or how a hippie celebrates Christmas," police in the western city of Koblenz said they discovered the giant plant in the living room of the suspect.

Earlier this year, the City Council of Oakland, California, voted to issue permits for industrial-scale medical marijuana farms. Four hydroponic warehouses, each holding some 30,000 cannabis plants, are expected to yield the city between $4.8 and $7.7 million per year in tax revenues.

City boosters hope the farms will help re-brand this rusting port city as a capital of all things cannabis, an “Oaksterdam” with its own brands of pot-related products and tourist destinations. But there’s a hitch, California Watch reports, and it involves the federal government.

An alleged drug cartel leader appears on the Mexican government's 2010 teacher payroll as part of the staff of an elementary school in a rural town, according to the federal education department's website.

Payroll documents posted on the website show that checks totaling about $4,000 were issued to Servando Gomez, a reputed leader of the La Familia cartel, during the first three months of the year for teaching at Melchor Ocampo Elementary School in his hometown of Arteaga in Michoacan state.
