The new conservative Dutch government wants to force the country's marijuana cafes to become "members only" clubs, a move that would effectively block foreigners from buying the drug.

If the idea ever becomes reality — it would be legally complicated and politically divisive — it would be the latest of the country's liberal policies to be scrapped or curtailed as the Dutch rethink the limits of their famed tolerance.

Das Begnadigungsgesuch von Bernard Rappaz ist vom Walliser Kantonsparlament abgelehnt worden. Unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit entschieden die 130 Abgeordneten über das Schicksal des Hanfbauern.

Der Walliser Grosse Rat hat am späteren Donnerstagnachmittag das Gnadengesuch von Bernard Rappaz behandelt und abgelehnt. Dies berichtet NZZ-Korrespondent Luzius Theler aus Sitten. 113 Abgeordnete stimmten gegen das Gnadengesuch, 14 dafür; insgesamt nahmen 128 Abgeordnete an der Sitzung teil.

The Wellcome Collection, which explores the connections between medicine, life and art in the past, present and future, has quickly become one of my favourite cultural venues in London. Their recently opened exhibition, High Society: Mind-Altering Drugs in History and Culture, explores the history of narcotics and -maybe more interestingly- the perception we developed of it through time.

Die Pressemeldungen der beiden letzten Tage über den EU-Drogenbericht veranlassen uns noch einmal, nachdrücklich Wege aufzuzeigen, die notwendig sind, den Gefahren des illegalen Drogenkonsums realistisch entgegenzutreten.

Hierzu gehört in erster Linie die Möglichkeit, die erworbenen Drogen testen zu lassen (in anderen Ländern ist ein Test selbstverständlich). Desweiteren ist die Legalisierung von Cannabisprodukten dringend angesagt. Durch weitere Kriminalisierung vor allem junger Menschen sind alle Präventionsbemühungen umsonst. Wie sollen wir mit diesen jungen Menschen ins Gespräch kommen, wenn wir sie weiter zu Kriminellen abstempeln, weil sie sich für einen Joint entschieden haben (ein ganzer Kasten Bier bleibt ohne Sanktionen).

More than 75 million Europeans (22.5%) have tried cannabis, 23 million (6.8%) of them have smoked it over the last twelve months, and 3 million (2.3%) may use it daily, according to the annual report published Wednesday by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The report estimates that 3 million young Europeans (2.3%) use cannabis daily and that over the past year, about 1,000 tons of cannabis have been seized on European soil.
