At least three gangs have struck deals to fly drugs to West Africa and from there to Europe, according to US prosecutors.

"The sky's the limit," one Sierra Leone trafficker boasted to a Drug Enforcement Administration informant, according to court documents.

Most of the cocaine flown to Africa is bound for Europe, where demand has been rising over the last decade. South American gangs are turning to aircraft because European navies have been intercepting more boat shipments along the African coast, trafficking experts say.

A ton of Mafia cocaine with a street value of more than £250 million after it was seized from a container vessel by Italian colleagues.

Officers from the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) passed the tip off on to Italian detectives after they were told of a ‘huge shipment’ of the class A drug had left South America and was heading for Europe.

The cocaine, which was destined for Italy and northern Europe, was found hidden inside farm machinery that had been on board a container loaded onto a freight vessel.

Serbia has been implementing the law that provides for the confiscation of property acquired through criminal means. The value of properties seized so far has been estimated at 200m euros.
