Nigeria seized $9.9 million worth of heroin concealed in auto parts shipped from Iran, its anti-drugs agency said on Friday, days after the West African country reported Tehran to the U.N. over an illegal arms seizure.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said the haul at the Apapa seaport in Lagos on Thursday, one of its biggest recent seizures, was based on "strong intelligence" received from foreign collaborators about four months ago.

Based on the intelligence, the agency had closely monitored the consignment and some key players behind its shipment before it arrived in Lagos, NDLEA spokesman Mitchell Ofoyeju said.

The head of Russia's federal drug control agency says the U.S. has failed to dismantle heroin-processing laboratories in Afghanistan despite specific information he has given American officials about the facilities.

Eine unbekannte Pflanzenkrankheit hat in Afghanistan fast die Hälfte der Mohnpflanzen vernichtet. Deshalb wurden in diesem Jahr nur noch 3900 statt 6900 Tonnen Rohopium geerntet. Der Preis für Trockenopium ist wegen der Knappheit massiv gestiegen. Die Mohnbauern verdienen sogar mehr.

Die Produktion von Rohopium in Afghanistan bricht nach Schätzungen der Vereinten Nationen in diesem Jahr fast um die Hälfte ein. Grund dafür ist nicht der Kampf der Regierung gegen den Drogenanbau, sondern eine Erkrankung der Schlafmohnpflanze.

Military police are investigating claims that British soldiers may have trafficked heroin from Afghanistan.
