A group of reputable politicians and academics have called for all drugs to be legalised in the Netherlands, breathing new life on Wednesday into the run-up to parliamentary elections in the northern European country.

Regulating the growing of dagga and the dealing of cocaine or even heroin could inject millions in taxes into state coffers, the group argued in an open letter.

Pot activist Marc Emery is preparing for a U.S. prison cell after Canada's federal justice minister ordered him extradited Monday, but there's a chance he could serve his sentence in Canada, his lawyer said.

The self-proclaimed "Prince of Pot" addressed reporters in front of the B.C. Supreme Court before turning himself in to police custody, where he was informed that federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson had signed his extradition order.

Surrounded by confusion regarding exactly what was taking place, the Czech Republic changed its laws on the possession and growing of drugs at the start of this year. The change was more of a far-reaching clarification than a fundamental overhaul, reports Chris Johnstone at Radio Praha.

The new law that came into effect January 1 was an attempt to clear up what had been a hazy legal situation. Under the old law, all types of drug possession and use were criminal offenses. The new law makes possession or cultivation of cannabis (and certain other drug plants) an "administrative offense," subject to only a fine if small amounts are involved.
