Pot activist Marc Emery is preparing for a U.S. prison cell after Canada's federal justice minister ordered him extradited Monday, but there's a chance he could serve his sentence in Canada, his lawyer said.

The self-proclaimed "Prince of Pot" addressed reporters in front of the B.C. Supreme Court before turning himself in to police custody, where he was informed that federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson had signed his extradition order.

Mexican police have detained a woman said to be the wife of drug trafficker Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, in the government's latest push to track down the country's most wanted man.

Griselda Lopez and one of Guzman's daughters were taken into custody after a raid by police and soldiers on a house in Guzman's home state of Sinaloa in northwestern Mexico on Wednesday, Riodoce, a Sinaloan newspaper, said on its website.

Mexican law enforcement said anti-drug units searched seven homes seizing safes, jewels and luxury cars in the Sinaloan capital of Culiacan on Wednesday.

Hundreds of police and federal agents raided a public housing complex Tuesday and arrested more than three dozen people allegedly involved in selling an estimated $65 million worth of drugs.

Authorities rounded up 39 of the 70 suspects being sought for being in a gang that sold heroin, crack, cocaine, marijuana and prescription drugs to people in the northern coastal city of Carolina and nearby areas, police said.

Afghanistan's opium farmers are facing a lean harvest due to a mystery fungus which has seriously affected half of Papaver somniferum poppies in the country's Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

The infection "attacks the root of the plant, climbs up the stem and makes the opium capsule wither away", the BBC outlines. Some farmers suggest NATO troops have sprayed their crops with chemicals, but this was rejected by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) head Antonio Maria Costa.
